How To Keep Your Head Down
Step 1: Turn your hips to start your downswing
Your hips are the engine of the swing. They enable you to transfer your weight from the back foot to the front foot at the beginning of your downswing. The worst thing to do is to turn your shoulders first, or to use your arms to prematurely fire the club-head at the ball before it has a chance to accelerate fully.
Step 2: Relax your neck
You don’t need a long swing and you don’t need to be super-flexible. All that’s required is that you let your hips and shoulders deliver your arms into the hitting zone while keeping your head relatively still. The worst thing to do is to keep your head fixed so that it turns with the shoulders and hips in one piece. Take a smaller swing if need be so that you keep your head still and looking at the ball at impact.
Step 3: Follow through with ease
Once your club has been allowed to contact the ball and then take a divot a few inches beyond the ball, you should let your body completely relax and not resist the force of the club which should naturally and effortlessly pull you up and out of your shot. Don’t be so set on keeping your head down that you get stuck down there. Picture those beautiful finishes pros make and pretend you’re one of them.
Step 4: Don’t trick yourself
Get a professional to watch your swing and ask them to evaluate your impact position. A great way to practice is to use a golf swing training aid like the SwingNumber N1. If you can see the number flash at impact you know you’re making progress.
